Drupal 10 - What to expect?

Drupal 10 - What to expect?
What does this mean for website owners?
When will Drupal 10 be released?

A year has passed since the release of Drupal 9, and upgrading to Drupal 9 is still on the to-do list of many companies. With Drupal 10, however, the next major release is already in the starting blocks. The tenth version of the CMS is expected to be released in mid-2022. The exact dates are not yet known, but in 2020 Gábor Hojtsy, the coordinator of the Drupal 10 Readiness Strategic Initiative, already announced in his DrupalCon speech that we can expect the release of D10 in June 2022.

What will happen to Drupal 9, 8 and 7?

All earlier versions will be gradually phased out, which will then also mean that official support will cease. There will be no more updates that provide stability, security, performance and new features for the websites. For users, this means having their own website ready for Drupal 10 from summer onwards.

Drupal 9 is expected to have the shortest lifecycle among the Drupal major releases. This is basically due to the third-party components on which Drupal depends and whose life cycle is currently undergoing massive changes. Major dependencies include Symfony, CKEditor, PHP and Composer:

  • D9 is on schedule to reach End of Lifetime at the end of 2023. The web framework Symfony will be phased out in November 2023 in version 4 and will then only be available in versions 5 and 6. In addition, PHP 7 will only be supported until the end of 2021. jQuery UI is currently no longer supported.
  • D8 will only be supported until the end of 2021. Another important reason is the end of life of Symfony 3 in November 2021.
  • D7 will be supported until the end of 2022. The support is longer than for D8, which is surprising for many. As too many websites are currently running on D7, the support period has been extended to give website owners even more time to upgrade.

What can you expect in Drupal 10?

It looks like Drupal 10 will build on Drupal 9 without massive changes - similar to how Drupal 9 built on Drupal 8. So we don't expect any revolutionary changes like we saw in version 8 compared to version 7.

Nevertheless, exciting features are in the pipeline. Drupal founder and lead developer Dries Buytaert said during his keynote at DrupalCon North America 2021 that development is based on feedback from Communicy. Thus, from the community, there are currently 5 major initiatives being worked on - the decoupled menus, the "easy out of the box", the automated updates, the Drupal 10 readiness and the new front-end theme initiatives.

All third-party dependencies are updated so that the core is on the latest components for greater system stability, performance and security.

Among them:

  • CKEditor 5 replaces CKEditor 4 to improve content editing.
  • Modern JavaScript components used instead of jQuery UI
  • Symfony 5 or Symfony 6 used instead of Symfony 4
  • PHP 8.0 is required instead of PHP 7.3
  • Internet Explorer 11 is no longer supported

Easy out oft he box

Drupal will become even more intuitive and user-friendly, as the media integration, the layout builder and the handling of menu and URL features will be improved and the Admin Core Claro will replace the used Seven.

Automated updates

Smooth and secure updates will become a reality in D10 as update functionality is added to the core and made available for Composer-based websites.

Decoupled menus

Drupal is set to become a leading CMS for headless technologies, allowing JavaScript front-ends to use menus managed in Drupal.

New front-end theme

The frontend theme Olivero will be incorporated as a modern default theme instead of Bartik (including starter kit) tools) and made available in the core version.

Improved Site Builder experience

D10 will become more intuitive for site builders thanks to the new Site Builder Tool/Project Browser initiative. A special tool is designed to help install and update modules without using the command line.

How can you prepare your website for Drupal 10?
Sites with Drupal 9 and 8

Backwards compatibility between D10 and 9 and 9 and 8 is a promise for easy upgrades. According to a DrupalCon talk by Matt Glaman and Ofer Shaal about D9/10 upgrade tools, there is a lot of feedback that the upgrade processes should be really smooth.

Drupal 7 websites

According to current information, D10 will include migration tools from D7. However, there is no guarantee that all modules used will be ready for use immediately. Therefore, we recommend starting the migration to D9 as soon as possible in order to be able to switch to D10 as soon as possible in 2022.
